PLAYING THE VIOLIN
LEFT-HANDED
Some people who are left-handed think that they should learn to play
the violin left-handed. But the internal structure of a violin is
asymetric from left to right. So, even if you reversed the
outside of the instrument by restringing it and by building a chin rest
for the right side of the instrument, the treble vibrations would
transfer into the base bar inside the instrument and the bass
vibrations would go to the sound post in the instrument. This is
backwards from how it is designed to work. You could have the
instrument rebuilt on the inside also, but there may be more asymetry
that I don't know about.
It
just seems more prudent to learn to play right-handed. You would
certainly have an advantage over a right-handed player in fingering the
instrument.
